Equipment Upgrade: Sony a6400

After evaluating the limitations of shooting on a smartphone, our production plan changed significantly. My friend Cyrus has recently developed a interest in Photography and owns higher quality camera equipment, including the Sony a6400. He offered to let us use his equipment and teach us the technical basics before filming. This immediately expanded the professional potential of our project.

The Sony a6400 features an APS-C senor, which is substantially larger than a smartphone sensor. This allows for stronger control over depth of field, meaning we can create shallow focus to isolate characters within the frame. In mafia film, selective focus can visually emphasize hierarchy and power by separating the protagonist from the background.

More importantly, this camera allows full manual control over aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This is critical for executing effective low key lighting, which is a major convention of the crime genre. By manually adjusting exposure, we can preserve deep shadows rather than allowing automatic software to flatten contrast. This helps maintain the chiaroscuro aesthetic that communicates secrecy and authority.

Cyrus has also begun explaining the foundational photography concepts such as:

- Exposure Triangle

- White balance control

- Focus Modes

- Lens selection

Understanding these will ensure we are not just using a better camera, but we are actually learning how to use it intentionally. The equipment itself does not create cinematic quality, we still need the skills.
