Beginning the Editing Process

After completing our filming, we began the post-production phase of The Boss's Shadow. Editing is where the separate scenes we filmed begin to come together into a single narrative. Even though filming went pretty well, the editing process determines how the story flows and how effectively tension is created. The first step in editing was importing all of our footage into the editing software and organizing it so that we could easily locate each shot.

It took us a couple days to get the footage from the google drive of the SD card. When we finally got the google drive we reviewed all the clips and footage we had, we picked out each clip we thought was good enough to make the cut, then renamed them all and in order of the storyboard sequence. We didn't always shoot the shots in chronological order of the film because of lighting and location. We weren't able to download the scenes we needed off the school computer onto the USB so I had to download them at my house.

The opening scene sequence currently follows this structure:

1. Diner conversation introducing characters

2. Lucas and Jake leaving the diner

3. Discussion between Boss and right hand man

4. Car conversation where betrayal is suggested

5. Bridge Scene

One important lesson from beginning the editing process is that filming is only part of creating a story. Editing determines how the audience experiences the narrative.

Small decisions like when to cut, how long to hold a shot, or which reaction shot to include can dramatically change how a scene feels.

As we continue editing our focus will be on improving pacing, building suspense, fitting into the time restriction, and leading up to the final scene.
