Production Blog - Film Recorded

Last night we officially began filming The Boss's Shadow, and it was our first time shooting the improved version of our midterm concept. This shoot included the diner scene, car scenes, and portions of the bridge scene, all filmed around night time.

Overall, the experience was more controlled and organized than our midterm, mainly because of how much time we spent in pre production

The biggest improvement was preparation. Since we had a full storyboard with planned shots, we weren't guessing what to film as we went. We knew where the camera needed to be placed. what camera angles we needed, we was speaking in each shot, and what the emotional tone of each scene should be.

The diner scene especially went smoothly. Blocking was clear, and the power dynamic between Joey and the others felt natural. The dialogue flowed better then expected, and the lighting gave the scene a realistic crime film atmosphere.

The car scenes also looked strong visually. The framing made the conversation feel more intense and shady. Passing lights created natural shadows, which added to the suspense.

Filming at night definitely created some challenges.

Lighting was our biggest concern. We had to adjust positioning many times. The lighting was too dark sometimes, and the camera couldn't pick it up.

Audio was another problem we faced because all we had was a big microphone on the camera, not individual mics for each of the actors. Hopefully when we go over the footage the audio is detectable and you can hear the dialogue clearly. The music in the diner was kind of loud and some people were in the diner at the same time which might cause more sound to be picked up.

Compared to our midterm:

- We relied more on dialogue to build tension

- Camera placement was more planned out

- Shots were steadier

- Story felt clearer

- Visual quality increased
