Production Blog - Filming the Car Scene

The car scene is where the real conflict begins. After leaving the diner, Lucas starts questioning Joey's authority and suggests taking power for themselves. This moment shifts the story from simple criminal activity to betrayal. Because of that, the way we filmed this scene was extremely important.

Filming inside a car was one of our biggest technical challenges. Unlike the diner, we had very limited room for:

- Camera placement

- Actor movement

- Lighting adjustments

We had to carefully position the Sony a6400 so that both actors were made visible without making the shot feel awkward or cramped. Tight framing actually worked in our favor because it created a claustrophobic feeling. The audience feels physically close to the characters, which creates tension.

We used over the shoulder shots to show the conversation shifts and give the shot more of a shady and private conversation feel.

We were originally going to cut to a tighter close up of Lucas's face when he suggest taking control. This would of emphasized the seriousness of what he's saying. We couldn't do this because of the size of the camera, would of been very difficult to be able to position the camera there, especially because we shot the scene while driving in the car.

Since we filmed at night, lighting inside the car was minimal. We relied on:

- Streetlights passing by

- Interior car light

- Exposure controlled on the camera

The low-key lighting created moving shadows across their faces, which unintentionally added to the suspense. It feels unpredictable and uneasy, which matches the tone of betrayal.

This scene was a turning point of the opening. Without it, the bridge scene would feel random. Here the audience understands Lucas's ambition. The car becomes more than just a location. It becomes a space where loyalty starts to break.

This scene helped elevate our project because it focuses on psychological tension rather then immediate action. It shows growth  from our midterm by allowing conflict to develop naturally.
