Production - Filming the Diner Scene

 The diner scene was one of the most important parts of our film because it establishes the hierarchy between the characters. This is where the audience first understands who has power and who does not.

Because of that, we were very intentional with blocking, framing, and lighting

We seated Joey at the head of the booth so he has visually controlled the space. Jake and Lucas sat across from him, slightly closer together and Scott was positioned more quietly, reinforcing his role as someone who observes rather then leads.

Joey = Authority

Jake = Loyal but uncertain

Lucas = Frustrated and tense

Scotty = Right hand man, Observational

We used mostly medium shots during the opening conversation to ground the audience in the space. However, when Joey speaks about paying off the Yankees players and mentions the body still being in the trunk, we shift into tighter framing. Close-ups emphasize his dominance and seriousness.

Jake and Lucas are often framed together in the same shot. this builds the idea that they are connected, which later supports their potential betrayal.

We avoided dramatic camera movement during this part of the dialogue. This reflects control. Joey does not need movement to show power.

Because we filmed at night, we used more lowkey lighting to create a darker tone.

We faced a couple challenges with the camera and the lighting inside of the diner especially when it got darker outside and had to reshoot a couple of scenes.

These scenes relied more heavily on dialogue. We made sure the pacing felt natural and not rushed. Joey speaks calmly, even when discussing violence. That calm tone makes him even more intimidating. Lucas reacts more emotionally which plants the future conflict. Jake acts as middle ground, reinforcing the tension between loyalty and ambition.

The diner scene is the foundation of the entire opening. Without it, the bridge scene would feel random. By establishing power and conflict early, the later action feels earned. This is one of the biggest improvements from our midterm. Instead of being on a park bench the diner makes the film feel a lot more like a crime or mafia movie.
